“No Action, Messaging Only (NAMO),” former Union Minister Jairam Ramesh on Wednesday created an acronym to describe Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech in which he announced a stimulus package of ₹20 lakh crore.

A day after Mr. Modi’s speech, several Congress leaders took to social media to react to the announcement.

Former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said the announcements were like a blank page.

“Yesterday, PM gave us a headline and a blank page. Naturally, my reaction was a blank! Today, we look forward to the FM filling the blank page. We will carefully count every ADDITIONAL rupee that the government will actually infuse into the economy. We will also carefully examine who gets what? ” said Mr. Chidambaram in a series of tweets.

“And the first thing we will look for is what the poor, hungry and devastated migrant workers can expect after they have walked hundreds of kilometres to their home states. We will also examine what the bottom half of the population (13 crore families) will get in terms of REAL MONEY,” he added.

Taking a dig at Mr. Modi’s preference for acronyms and phrases to explain his government policy, Mr. Ramesh tweeted, “Last night the Prime Minister did what comes to him best. Maximum Packaging, Minimum Meaning. It was a case of classic NAMO. No Action Messaging Only”.

Another Congress spokesperson Jaiver Shergill used the ₹20 lakh crore speech to draw comparison with the BJP’s pre-2014 election promise of bringing back offshore black money and depositing ₹15 lakh into the accounts of every Indian family.

“BJP Government is an expert in showing stars to people in broad daylight. We sincerely hope that that the promised ₹20 lakh crore package is not being made in the same factory and is not being stitched with the same cloth as the promise of ₹15 lakh to every Indian, as the promise of cleaning Ma Ganga and as the promise of making India a 5-trillion US Dollar economy,” Mr. Shergill said.
