Chico Flores lifts lid on coronavirus troubles in emotional post as ex-Swansea City star contemplates retirement

Former Swansea City star Chico Flores is contemplating retiring from football in a bid to spend more time with his family.

On Monday evening, the Spaniard posted an emotional letter on his official Twitter and Instagram accounts in which he revealed the coronavirus presented his family with "a lot of troubles".

And the central defender has revealed he has - for the time being at least - hung up his boots in a bid to be with his family during what are testing times.

Part of the statement read: "I've been pretty disconnected from the world these days.

"I'm going to be brief, after this long year and after everything that happened with in Coruna, I have decided along with my family to stop, at least for now.

"The virus gave us a lot of troubles and will continue to cause them. There have been no holidays for us to be able to enjoy time with our families, which is what really matters in this life, spent time with your loved ones.

"It has been a long, complicated year, separated from my children in three different times due to confinement, and now they deserve more time and attention, which is what they ask of me."

Flores went on to reveal that he will carefully consider whether or not he will play professional football again before confirming that he harbours hopes of coaching in the future.

He signed off the post by saying: "To the fans, thank you for being there for us through thick and thin, I have felt very loved since I arrived and the feeling is mutual, thank you for that special connection.

"Here, in the south of Spain you have a friend."

The 33-year-old spent two seasons with the Swans after signing from Genoa in 2012.

He was part of the side that won the League Cup under Michael Laudrup as well as the one that embarked on a memorable Europa League run following that triumph over Bradford at Wembley.

He joined current club Fuenlabarada in the summer of 2019.

The centre-back made a total of 75 appearances for Swansea, scoring four goals.
