Chicken poo causing stench so bad people in Aintree 'can't open their windows'

People living in Aintree are complaining about a stench so "foul" they can't open their windows.

Mick Walsh wrote on Facebook : "Is anybody else unhappy with the smell coming from the farm on Bull Bridge Lane? It's horrible, this is not a normal farm smell and it's been going on for two weeks.

"We are being told to keep windows open because of Covid, but we can’t open them because of the smell."

Nicki Ruddy replied: "It always smells awful but you can definitely notice a difference."

Dian Bradshaw added: "It's absolutely disgusting and needs addressing."

The farm is operated by Lancashire-based agricultural company D&C Wrennall, who say the issue has now been resolved.

Sefton Council revealed the odour was caused by the spreading of chicken manure, and said while it's unpleasant, does not pose any health risks to people nearby.

The council's spokeswoman told the ECHO : “Sefton Council have been made aware of unpleasant odours in certain areas of Aintree.

“We want to assure the public that while the smell is unpleasant, there is no health risk to the members of the community.

“The odour was caused by the spreading of chicken manure at this location and steps are now being taken by the individual to resolve this issue.

"The odour is likely to subside over the coming hours.

“After discussions with the individual, it has been agreed that chicken manure will not be spread at this location again."

It's not the first time complaints have been made over odours in the region this week.

On Monday, Wirral garage owner Stuart Montador complained of a foul smell he says has plagued Birkenhead for some three decades.

United Utilities apologised to customers living near its wastewater treatments over "an increase in odours emanating from the site." It also said it was doing everything possible to minimise odours.

Yesterday (Wednesday), a man living near the Beaconsfield Sewage Treatment Works in Port Sunlight, said the smell is so bad children in the area had renamed the site the "fart factory".

Addressing people’s concerns, a spokesperson for United Utilities said: “We’re really sorry for the odours people living near our works at Beaconsfield have noticed.

“We had a recent breakdown in our odour control and we’re working hard to put it right.

“We have instructed contractors to start work on a temporary solution to rectify the issue as soon as possible and we will be able to let people know timescales in the next few days.

“In the longer term we are planning a complete overhaul of the site’s odour control system, to prevent this from happening in future.”
