Two women and an infant have been located safe and well after a search and rescue operation in the Hunter overnight.
After 1pm on Wednesday, two women - aged 27 and 25 - and an 11-month-old boy attended the Chichester State Forest to inspect a campsite ahead of a planned trip, police said.
Police were told that the women's Nissan Patrol became bogged in wet ground shortly after.
They attempted to free the vehicle for a number of hours but were unsuccessful.
Around 8.30pm, the 27-year-old called police for assistance.
Port Stephens-Hunter Police District officers established a command post and launched a search and rescue operation, with assistance from NSW Ambulance officers and the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service.
Police said that at about 11.10pm, officers heard a car horn down a steep, undriveable fire trail and located all three people safe and well.
They escorted the group out of the forest and took them to Dungog Police Station where they were released into the care of family members.
