A man has been arrested following a police hunt for a person seen carrying a shotgun in Chichester.

Schools in the city were locked down on Friday afternoon as armed officers swooped on the area.

Police took to social media to warn people away from the area after the suspect was spotted near Litten Gardens in the city centre at about 2pm.

Pupils from at least two schools in the area were told to stay inside as a precaution before they were later sent home.

The Independent understands the incident was not believed to be terror-related.

Video footage shared on Twitter showed a police helicopter circling over Chichester High School.

The school used its website to tell parents it had kept all pupils inside on police advice and that they were safe, before later posting an update to say it had allowed them to go home on police advice.

Deputy headteacher Tom Brixey said the incident was not linked to the school, “but the wider Chichester area”.
