Nov. 18--Temperatures will bottom out Tuesday as the core of coldest air associated with the current arctic outbreak moves overhead. Readings hovering in the single digits and teens will struggle to reach the 20-degree mark.

Should Tuesday's high stay below 22 degrees, it will set a record as the coldest high temperature for that date, Nov. 18, which was set in 1903.

Frigid air will then retreat northeast into Canada, though this will be a gradual process, with readings not expected to rise above freezing through the end of the week. Weak low pressure skirting across the Great Lakes on Wednesday will bring slight warming, before a reinforcing surge of cold air arrives Thursday.

More substantial warming is due over the weekend as a major storm system heads toward Chicago, bringing widespread, potentially heavy rain to the area. Forecasts suggest temperatures will warm but still run slightly below normal through Thanksgiving.
