Sept. 25--Caterpillar announced it's slashing thousands more people from a workforce already down 31,000 employees since mid-2012. Caterpillar CEO Doug Oberhelman said the mining industry's downturn is partly to blame. But cuts upon cuts also suggest that Cat isn't so great at digging out of a hole.

Lights at Levi's Stadium, the San Francisco 49ers' new home, apparently are so bright that NBC Bay Area reports pilots are complaining it imperils landings in nearby San Jose. Fortunately, at Soldier Field, home of the Bears, no one's seen anything too bright this season.

Patriot Ethan Allen was captured by the British 240 years ago Friday. Sentenced to death, Allen ultimately was freed in a prisoner swap. A furniture company appropriated his name in the 1930s, so some customers may associate his name with getting the chair although he avoided execution himself.
