Sept. 17--Apple disappointed some mobile users who updated to the latest operating system and found it didn't include the "middle-finger" emoji many expected. Worst of all, these people then had to vent to Apple without the perfect emoji.

General Motors will pay a $900 million settlement, ending the Justice Department's criminal investigation into its failure to disclose the ignition defect blamed for at least 124 deaths. Attempting to end an investigation into how fast you were driving by offering a "settlement" to police remains frowned upon.

The Federal Reserve has managed quite a paradox. Notice all the interest in almost no interest.

Expedia has closed its deal to acquire Chicago-based rival travel booking site Orbitz. Once the federal government said it wouldn't hold up the merger on antitrust concerns, about all that could have kept it from going forward was if it had been scheduled to fly out of O'Hare.

David Letterman's next TV job will be to examine India's solar power initiatives as part of National Geographic Channel's "Years of Living Dangerously." The Emmy-winning documentary series exploring climate change is an unexpected venue for Letterman, who for years insisted on working in a famously chilly studio.

Remember when political debates were about how well candidates articulated their views to educate voters, not who got in the best zinger, was most likable and had a signature moment? Yeah, me neither.
