Chicago Tribune Nina Metz column

Sept. 29--A sequel to 1997 family drama "Soul Food" is in the works from writer-director George Tillman Jr.

The original, which was set (and filmed) in Chicago and centered on a close-knit African-American family, starred Vanessa Williams, Vivica A. Fox and Nia Long and made $43 million at the box office on a $7 million budget. At the time, Tillman told the Tribune that he "wanted to make a movie about a black family in middle America. I wanted to make a film where everyone can look at them and say, 'This is my family.'"

Not much is known about the proposed sequel, which will be distributed (like its predecessor) by Fox 2000 Pictures. Tillman's longtime producing partner, Bob Teitel, tells me he will be involved but there is no script yet, nor any word on where the new film will be set.

Both Tillman and Teitel are alumni of Columbia College Chicago. They most recently teamed up as producers on the upcoming Ice Cube-starring "Barbershop 3," which filmed in ... Atlanta.
