Chicago Tribune Nina Metz column

March 24--Parents who work outside the home are no doubt scrambling to find a supervised alternative for their kids next Friday (April 1), when the Chicago Teachers Union plans a one-day walkout strike. For students with an interest in movies and writing, Facets is offering a free all-day film criticism camp.

The cinema offers similar multi-week programs during the summer, and this will be a condensed version of that, where students can "learn how to understand, analyze, critique, write and talk about film in a full day of media education." The day runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will be divided into two groups sorted by age (5 to 7 years old and 8 to 12 years old). The day is free but parents must register their children on a first-come, first-served basis. Capacity is 95 students.

Facets (which is in Lincoln Park at 1517 W. Fullerton Ave.) is stressing that participants will be watching only "age-appropriate films from the Chicago International Children's Film Festival."

For more information go to www.facets.org or call 773-281-9075 ext. 3056.
