Chicago Tribune Howard Reich column

May 19--Blues master Jimmy Burns, Irish fiddler Liz Carroll and Romanian cimbalom virtuoso Nicolae Feraru will be among several prominent Chicago musicians performing free concerts at CTA stations this summer.

Iron Heart Chicago will spotlight these artists -- plus mariachi violinist Juan Rivera, Greek clarinetist Jim Stoynoff and Chinese erhu master Betti Xiang -- in performances from 4 to 6 p.m. June 10-17. The musicians will rotate among the Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple, Red and Yellow stations, performing on stages at ground level entrances.

The event borrows its name from writer Nelson Algren's description of the "L" line as the city's "rusty iron heart" and is presented by the Old Town School of Folk Music in conjunction with the CTA and the city's Department of Cultural Affairs and Special Events.

The musicians also will play Chicago parks June 19-21 and June 26-28; the Old Town School of Folk Music's Square Roots Festival, July 10-12; and the Old Town School's World Music Wednesday series, July 29.

All the performances are free; for details visit ironheartchicago.org or oldtownschool.org.
