May 19--Talk about a Balancing Act.
The folks at WCIU's "You Me" morning show emailed earlier this week to see if I wanted to join them Thursday morning to talk about some trending topics, including a handful that I've discussed here in my column.

How could I say no? I hardly ever turn down a chance to gab about trending topics. Plus Candace "Candid Candace" Jordan would be on the show, and she's an absolute gem.
Only problem is my husband is traveling and my kids needed to get to school at the same time the segment was taping, and I'm in the middle of a huge project at work, and I'm emceeing a school fundraiser Friday night, for which I still need to write an intro. (So four problems, actually.)
I still said yes, and I'm glad I did.
I woke up early, packed lunches, got dressed, roused my kids, dropped them at their friends' houses for rides/walks to school and made it to the studio three minutes early. My son may or may not have eaten a Dilly Bar for breakfast (he did), and my house may or may not look like a band of roving marauders pillaged it for spoils (it does). But none of that is the point.
The point is we all talk a lot about simplifying our lives, and I'm a big fan of that idea. But there are going to be days and weeks (years?) when simple is just not an option -- or not the option you feel like choosing -- and that's OK too. I'm also a big fan of leaning on your village and letting a few things slide in the name of going after what makes you tick.
Here are a few minutes of our 20-minute segment, in which we discuss my recent column about Gwyneth Paltrow's Goop issue devoted to sex.
Now, back to that project ...
