Chicago Tribune Heidi Stevens column

Nov. 10--I'm not really one for women's magazines. Too many pages devoted to fixing things I never knew were broken.

("Obsessed with your pores?" Not until you mentioned it! I'd never given them a passing glance! What's going on with them? Are they big? Clogged? Unsightly? Can I buy something to fix them? Do I sound obsessed?)

I've had a soft spot in my heart, though, for Glamour ever since college, when I began dabbling in both writing and feminism. A little subversive, a little cheeky, a lot feminist, every issue offered something to sink my teeth into, even if I flipped past all the ads and articles instructing me to tone things I didn't know you could tone.

My hands-down favorite Glamour has always been the annual Women of the Year issue, birthed in 1990. All year I look forward to the issue, when I can read profiles of the politicians, philanthropists, athletes, celebrities and other leaders who make the world a better place.

The feature culminates in a ceremony at Carnegie Hall, where the winners give uplifting speeches and pledge to keep doing inspirational, remarkable work in their fields.

Anita Hill attended in 1991, weeks after testifying in front of the Supreme Court about then-nominee Clarence Thomas' alleged sexual harassment. Maya Angelou sang "God Put a Rainbow in the Clouds" to the audience in 2009. Gloria Steinem, Hillary Clinton, Tina Fey, Lena Dunham and Malala Yousafzai have all attended as recipients.

This year I'm going. The awards are tonight, and I'll be there to report/tweet/Facebook the fun. The 2014 honorees include Chelsea Clinton, "The Mindy Project's" Mindy Kaling, "Good Morning America's" Robin Roberts and Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o, among others.

Watch this space on Tuesday for a full report, and follow me on Twitter and Facebook for live updates.

I'm excited to be in the room with so many groundbreaking, Earth-shaking women. And I'm not going to give a moment's thought to my pores.
