Chicago Town launches new blueberry and sausage flavour to 'excite pizza lovers'

Gordon Ramsay look away now… the pineapple pizza has a new rival – blueberry.

The topping is among a new range set to have pizza purists choking on their grissini. It will be joined by other fruits, including figs – and a honey version – planned by frozen brand Chicago Town.

The news will enrage chef Ramsay, who is famed for his rants against pineapple as a topping.

Chicago is trialling a sausage and blueberry deep dish variety this summer.

The firm’s Rachel Bradshaw said: “We’re always looking to excite pizza lovers with new and exciting concepts, so we keep a watchful eye on the latest trends.”

The pineapple-based “Hawaiian” topping was created in Canada in 1962 by Sam Panopoulos, a Greek immigrant.

It has remained controversial ever since, with a 2017 YouGov poll finding 82% liked pineapple, but only 53% wanted it on a pizza.

And top chefs like Ramsay and Gino D’Acampo remained horrified by the concept.

Hothead Ramsay ranted at the audience on ITV ’s The Nightly Show in 2017: “You don’t put f***ing pineapple on a pizza”.

And in 2018 Italian D’Acampo told a young guest on This Morning: “A fruit? On a pizza? Pineapple should never be on a pizza. In Italy, this does not exist.”
