Chicago stabbing leaves 1 dead, 3 wounded

CHICAGO _ A man was killed and as many as three others were wounded in a stabbing in Chicago's Chinatown district on Monday evening, police said.

About 8:15 p.m., officers responded to a call of a person down in the 200 block of West 23rd Street, a Chicago police spokesman said.

They found a 50-year-old man in the street with a stab wound to the back. He was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital and pronounced dead.

A 23-year-old man was also found nearby with a stab wound to the groin. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.

Shortly afterward, two men showed up at Stroger Hospital with stab wounds. They were believed to have been wounded in the same incident, police said. Their conditions were stabilized.

Detectives investigating the incident surveyed several buildings and spots on the sidewalk both along 23rd Street and Wentworth Avenue between Cermak Road and 23rd.

A laundromat just west of 23rd and Wentworth was roped off with crime scene tape. Police also roped off a long stretch of sidewalk starting near a restaurant on Wentworth, then snaking around the corner going north on 23rd, blocking access to a clothing store, dentist office, gift shop and a food company, all of which were closed for the night.

Police also taped off a section of the southwest corner of Cermak and Wentworth. Investigators shined flashlights along the ground and appeared to be examining trails of blood.

The attack took place near the official entrance to the Chinatown district, home to several brightly lit dim sum restaurants, bakeries and cafes that were nearing closing time.
