SAN FRANCISCO _ An Oxford University employee in a Friday court appearance agreed to be taken back to Chicago to face a charge of murder.
Andrew Warren, 56 of England, is one of two men accused in the July 27 stabbing death of Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau inside a Chicago apartment.
Wearing an orange jumpsuit in his first court appearance, Warren waived extradition, meaning he will not contest being transferred to an Illinois jail. With the assistance of a court hearing aid, he answered "yes" to a series of questions from Judge Edward Torpoco, who asked if Warren understood his rights.
The Oxford University financial officer, who worked at Somerville College, said he could not afford an attorney and was assigned San Francisco public defender Ariel Boyce-Smith while he remains on no bail in a San Francisco jail.
The court set a hearing on Sept. 8 for an update on when he will be transferred.
After the stabbing, Chicago police say Warren and former Northwestern University microbiologist Wyndham Lathem went on the lam for about a week until Warren surrendered in San Francisco and Lathem in Oakland.
Before arriving in California they donated money to a library in the name of the victim and Lathem sent a video message to friends and family apologizing for his involvement in the slaying, according to police.
Both men face first-degree murder charges in Chicago. Cornell-Duranleau, a hair stylist, was stabbed more than 40 times, police said.
Lathem also will not fight extradition. His friends appeared at his Dublin court hearing on Monday, where his attorney described him as a "gentle soul."
No friends or family appeared at Warren's appearance on Friday. Warren arrived in Chicago a few days before the killing, his first visit to the U.S., according to reports.
