Chicago Shakespeare’s hit musical ‘Six’ to reign over Broadway this winter

Liz Lauren Photo

As expected, the acclaimed pop/punk/metal/R&B/hip-hop musical “Six” is headed for Broadway, but it will make a few stops on the way to New York.

The show, which presents the six wives of Henry VIII as modern empowered women, will begin performances Feb. 13, 2020, at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre with an opening date of March 12, producers announced Thursday. Before that it will have short runs at American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts (Aug. 21-Sept. 7); the Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta (Nov. 2-24) and the Ordway Center for the Performing Arts in Saint Paul, Minnesota (Nov. 29-Dec. 22).

Since May, “Six” has been running at the Chicago Shakespeare Theater in its North American premiere, which concludes Sunday.

Broadway casting has yet to be announced. The show is designed for women to play all the roles as well as all of the band parts.

Excitement about “Six” has been building since its premiere at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2017. Listeners have been streaming songs from its cast album on average 300,000 times per day.
