Chicago police searching for gunman who killed 16-year-old girl as she was walking home from work

CHICAGO _ Chicago police are searching for the gunman who killed a 16-year-old girl as she walked home from work through Little Village on the West Side over the weekend.

Angie Monroy was shot in the head around 9:45 p.m. Saturday near the intersection of 24th and Rockwell streets. She was taken to Mount Sinai Medical Center where she was pronounced dead the next day, officials said.

Police spokeswoman Karie James said in an email Monday morning that no arrests have been made. James said it was not immediately clear whether Monroy was the intended target, but a GoFundMe page set up by Monroy's sister said the teen was killed "due to a crossfire."

"A witness was walking southbound down Rockwell when he heard multiple gunshots," James said. "When he turned around, he saw that the victim had sustained a gunshot wound to the head."

A police source said the teenager was a junior in high school at Benito Juarez Community Academy and she had been walking home from her job at a nearby clothing store.

According to the source, a witness told investigators the shooter or shooters were using gang-related terms before opening fire, striking the teenager. Surveillance video, from both private and city cameras, may have recorded some of the events that led up to the shooting and it is expected to be gathered and reviewed, the source said.
