Chicago Police Officer Wounded, Man Killed In Traffic Stop

Migrants seek shelter at the District 12 station of the Chicago Police Department in Chicago

A Chicago police officer was wounded and a 26-year-old man was killed in an exchange of gunfire during a traffic stop, according to police reports. The incident occurred in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on the city's West Side.

The wounded officer sustained a gunshot wound to the wrist and is currently hospitalized in good condition. Additionally, four other officers who were not shot were hospitalized for observation as a precautionary measure.

The man who fired shots suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at a hospital approximately 30 minutes after the shooting. He was identified as Dexter Reed, 26, by the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

Chicago police stated that the gunfire exchange took place while officers were near a car they had pulled over around 6 p.m. The exact number of officers who discharged their weapons has not been disclosed at this time.

Reports indicate that more than 50 rounds were detected by the ShotSpotter gunshot-detection system, with a firearm being recovered from the scene of the shooting.

Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling addressed the incident at a meeting of the Chicago Police Board, expressing his hopes for the wounded officer's swift recovery.

The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is currently investigating the shooting. As per standard procedure following police-involved shootings, the officer or officers involved will be placed on administrative duties for a period of 30 days.
