Chicago man charged in Dixmoor slaying held without bail

Oct. 27--A Humboldt Park man was ordered held without bail Sunday after a prosecutor said he was one of three people who fatally shot a Dixmoor man last week as the man was in the middle of a video call with his girlfriend.

Jonathan Rucker, 24, of the 2900 block of West Division Street, is charged with first-degree murder, home invasion and armed robbery in the Oct. 20 incident in south suburban Dixmoor that ended with the death of 32-year-old Deanthony Jackson, according to officials and Cook County court records.

Rucker and two other suspects went to Jackson's residence in the first block of West 143rd Street about 11 p.m., Assistant State's Attorney Joel Bruckman said.

Rucker approached a person sitting on a milk crate outside the residence, Bruckman said, and brandished a gun at the person while the two other suspects went through the person's pockets, taking $25.

Keeping his gun trained on the person outside, Rucker told the two other suspects to go into the residence, and he followed them in, Bruckman said.

Shots rang out from inside, Bruckman said. Jackson was struck as he was on a video call with his girlfriend.

Jackson was taken to Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, where he was pronounced dead just after midnight, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Two other people at the residence were injured in the shooting, authorities said.

Rucker and the two other suspects fled after the shooting, Bruckman said. No mention was made in court Sunday as to whether the other suspects had been apprehended.

Rucker admitted to being at the residence and to being aware that a gun was present, he said.

Rucker was convicted of second-degree murder as a juvenile in 2006, according to Bruckman.

He was arrested Friday, court records show.
