Chicago has seen 120 more shootings this year than last

June 16--Four people were killed and at least 24 other people were wounded by gunfire over the weekend in a month that has averaged more than one homicide a day.

The number of slayings in June is 19, according to an analysis of a Chicago Tribune database of city homicides. There has been a homicide 10 of the past 12 days -- the only exception was Tuesday, June 9, and Thursday, June 11.

The only days this month there hasn't been a homicide are June 1, 2, 9 and 11.

Through Monday morning, there have been 189 homicides so far this year and at least 1,107 shootings that resulted in injury, according to the database. During a comparable period in 2014, there were 167 homicides and at least 987 shootings. In 2013, the totals for a comparable period were 165 homicides and at least 880 shootings.

The latest fatal shooting happened Sunday evening in the South Austin neighborhood on the West Side.

Three men were shot about 6:20 p.m. in the 900 block of North Lorel Avenue. Police said the men were standing on a sidewalk when a gunman approached and opened fire.

A 31-year-old was hit in his back and side, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in serious condition and later pronounced dead there. He was identified as Byron Floyd, 31, of the 5500 block of West Cortland Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Two other men were wounded in the shooting. Another 31-year-old man was shot in his right leg and drove himself to West Suburban Medical Center in Oak Park, where he was listed in fair condition. A 36-year-old was shot repeatedly, including in his buttocks and arm, police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious condition.

No one was in custody in connection with the shooting early Monday.

About 12:30 a.m. Sunday, a 40-year-old man was killed and another man wounded in a drive-by shooting in the Back of the Yards neighborhood on the South Side.

The two men were standing on the corner of 44th and Honore streets when a red SUV and a light-colored sedan pulled up next to them and gunmen from both cars fired shots, police said.

The 40-year-old, later identified as David Martinez Jr., was hit in the head and pronounced dead on the scene, according to police and the medical examiner's office. The 38-year-old was hit in the neck and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized, police said.

A 23-year-old woman was fatally shot and a 20-year-old man was wounded in the Englewood neighborhood early Saturday. The two were sitting on a porch in the 7300 block of South Green Street about 2:50 a.m. when a light-colored SUV drove by and someone inside opened fire. The woman, later identified as Kelly Burrell, was shot in the chest, according to police and the medical examiner's office.

Burrell, who lived on the block where she was shot, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn where she was pronounced dead at 5:48 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

The man, 20, was hit in the leg and grazed in the abdomen. He was also taken to Christ Medical Center, where his condition stabilized, police said.

In addition to the fatal shootings, a man was stabbed to death in Uptown late Sunday. The man, who had not been identified as of early Monday, got into a fight with another man at a bus stop. As the argument escalated, one man stabbed the other in the neck with a knife.

The man, whose exact age was not available, was taken to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Police said a 58-year-old man was taken into custody but no criminal charges had been filed as of early Monday.

At least 24 people were wounded in shootings from 3 p.m. Friday through 6 a.m. Monday morning.
