Chicago firefighter to ask public for help in finding son’s killer

Tyler Bernicky, 25, was found stabbed to death Saturday on the South Side.

A Chicago firefighter was expected to hold a news conference Monday afternoon to ask for help from the public in identifying who killed his son.

Lt. David Bernicky will ask anyone who has information about the stabbing death of his son, Tyler Bernicky, 25, to come forward during a news conference scheduled for 3 p.m. outside Chicago Fire Department headquarters at 3510 S. Michigan Ave., according to fire department spokesman Larry Langford.

Tyler Bernicky was found Saturday morning in the 7900 block of South Ingleside Avenue when officers responded about 6 a.m. to a report of a burning vehicle in the block, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Tyler Bernicky, of Bronzeville, was lying unresponsive on a sidewalk with stab wounds to his chest, arm and ankle. He was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said.

Area South detectives recovered a police camera from the area and are conducting a homicide investigation, police said. Detectives determined that Bernicky was inside the van shortly before it was burned.

An autopsy released Sunday found that Bernicky died of multiple sharp force injuries, the medical examiner’s office said. His death was ruled a homicide.

David Bernicky is a firefighter stationed at a firehouse near O’Hare Airport.
