'Chicago Fire' newcomer Steven R. McQueen hasn't given up on Nightwing aspirations

Oct. 08--Steven R. McQueen has been campaigning for the role of Batman protege Nightwing for years. Whether anyone is casting that role at the moment is a different story.

McQueen -- who is expected to run Sunday's Bank of America Chicago Marathon, according to a race spokesperson -- has stated in interviews that he would love to play Dick Grayson's alter ego (Grayson becomes Nightwing after years of serving as Batman's sidekick, Robin). The newest member of "Chicago Fire" and former "Vampire Diaries" actor has posted a photo of himself alongside Nightwing on Instagram. And then there was the picture he posted of himself at the gym with the caption "Nightwing training."

"I like to read comic books," said McQueen, 27, Saturday at the first WhirlyCruz Cup at WhirlyBall-Chicago, which raised money for the 100 Club of Chicago. "I have a couple buddies on "Arrow" and know one of the producers and just tweet at them jokingly. Maybe I'll get a shot to do Nightwing on an episode or two (of 'Arrow.') I haven't had any talks. I'm just writing stuff online."

It was revealed last year that TNT was in serious talks to go forward with a live action pilot based on DC Comics' Teen Titans, which would include Grayson and his transition from Robin to Nightwing. TNT president Kevin Reilly told tvline.com in May that the pilot had been delayed because screenwriter Akiva Goldsman ("A Beautiful Mind") was busy.

McQueen, meanwhile, posted a photo of a Nightwing hoodie and comics on a table on Instagram last month. This led some fans to speculate that perhaps he had finally gotten his wish, just like they always do when he posts about Nightwing.

"It's not so much teasing," said McQueen of his motives. "I just think it would be fun (to play Nightwing)."
