Chicago Bulls should be ‘thinking hard’ about a full-on rebuild

This summer is set to be a crazy one. Teams like the Portland Trail Blazers and Washington Wizards are undergoing major changes, teams like the Miami Heat and New York Knicks could look to go all in, and the 2023 NBA Draft is set to be absolutely nuts. But the Chicago Bulls probably won’t get in on the fun.

By all accounts, the Bulls plan on running back the same core of Zach LaVine, DeMar DeRozan, and Nikola Vucevic next season. But in the long run, that could prove to be an absolutely foolish decision, as Chicago’s future looks fairly bleak at the moment.

According to Zach Buckley of Bleacher Report, while the Bulls are almost certailny going to avoid this path, they are primed for a full-on rebuild and should be looking to go that route.

“Plotting Chicago’s offseason path is tricky, because what it should do and what it will likely do are on opposite ends of the spectrum.

Outside looking in, the Bulls have maximized their roster and should be thinking hard about a top-to-bottom rebuild. But they haven’t shown any desire to self-destruct,” Buckley wrote.

LaVine, DeRozan, and Vucevic are all solid players, but they aren’t good enough together to win a championship. And while that may not tbe the immediate goal for every team, the fact that Chicago’s core isn’t even good enough to guarantee a playoff spot is concerning.

Rebuilding now could allow the Bulls go get back a significant return for their stars and start over. That’s what’s needed, but it’s probably not what’s going to happen.
