New Chicago Blackhawks forward Carl Soderberg was among the inactives on the second day of training camp Monday — but the first on-ice practice — at Fifth Third Arena.
According to the team, Soderberg has an issue with his immigration documentation and will join the team later.
Also sitting out was Brent Seabrook, who opted out this summer’s postseason because he felt he wasn’t physically ready for a playoff run. He, center Evan Barratt and forward Pius Suter were declared “unfit to participate”.
It was already expected that Jonathan Toews (illness) would miss all of camp and likely longer, as well as Kirby Dach (broken wrist) and Alex Nylander (knee).
Defenseman Duncan Keith and Connor Murphy sat out the first group of skaters at practice, but were on the active roster of 22 forwards and 14 defensemen.
Camp brings in some new faces, including Suter, who’s expected to make a push to play among the top six forwards, and Nikita Zadorov, who was acquired in the Brandon Saad trade with the Colorado Avalanche in October.
The team will keep a close eye on the progress of several young players, including defensemen Nicholas Beaudin, Wyatt Kalynuk and Ian Mitchell and forwards Brandon Hagel, Lucas Wallmark and Philip Kurashev.
The Hawks also invited five goaltenders.
Collin Delia, Malcolm Subban and Kevin Lankinen are the top contenders to replace Corey Crawford. Matthew Tomkins and Cale Morris round out the group.
