Chicago-based insurer CNA hit with ‘sophisticated cyberattack’

Chicago-based CNA Financial, one of the largest insurance companies in the country, was the victim of a cyberattack that has disrupted the company’s operations.

“On March 21, 2021, CNA determined that it sustained a sophisticated cybersecurity attack,” the company announced in a statement issued Wednesday. “The attack caused a network disruption and impacted certain CNA systems, including corporate email.”

The company’s website was also down.

CNA enlisted forensic experts to figure out the scope of the damage. If customer data was compromised, policyholders will be notified directly, the company said.

“The security of our data and that of our insureds’ and other stakeholders is of the utmost importance to us,” according to the company, which is working with law enforcement on the matter.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we have disconnected our systems from our network, which continue to function. We’ve notified employees and provided workarounds where possible to ensure they can continue operating and serving the needs of our insureds and policyholders to the best of their ability,” the company said.
