Chicago area players J.T. Compher, Anthony Louis on U.S. junior hockey roster

Dec. 02--Forwards J.T. Compher of Northbrook and Anthony Louis of Winfield were named Tuesday to the 30-man training camp roster for the U.S. team that will compete at the World Junior Championships in Canada Dec. 26-Jan. 5.

Compher, a Michigan sophomore, was Buffalo's second-round pick in the 2013 NHL draft. Louis, a Miami (Ohio) sophomore, was taken in the sixth round of that draft by the Blackhawks.

Four Hawks' draft choices are on the U.S. training camp roster, incliuding this year's first-round pick, forward Nick Schmaltz of Verona, Wis., now playing at North Dakota.

Both Compher and Louis were on the U.S. teams that won gold (2012) and silver (2013) medals at the Under-18 World Championships.

The roster will be cut to 23 after the Dec. 16-19 training camp in Boston.

The upcoming junior worlds are expected to feature the likely top two picks in the 2015 NHL draft, Connor McDavid of Canada and Jack Eichel of the U.S.

McDavid, who plays for the Erie Otters in the Ontario Hockey League, broke a bone in his right hand Nov. 11 but. according to NHL.com, he should be ready for the start of the tournament. The center had 51 points (16 goals) in 18 games prior to the injury.

Eichel has 21 points (8 goals) in 13 games for Boston University.
