The Airports of Thailand (AOT) board has approved the construction of second airports in Chiang Mai and Phuket with a combined planned investment of 120 billion baht.
AoT president Nitinai Sirismatthakarn said yesterday the board approved the plans in principle for the fiscal years 2019-2023, with each project allocated 60 billion baht, Thai media reported.
Construction is expected to begin in 2019 and be completed no later than 2025, he said.
Ban Thi district in neighbouring Lamphun province has been earmarked for Chiang Mai's second airport, and Ban Khok Kloi in Phangna province for the second Phuket airport. The two sites are each about 20-30km away from the existing ones.
Each facility will handle about 10 million passengers a year, he said.
