Chhattisgarh: CoBRA personnel killed in Maoist attack in Sukma

RAIPUR: A personnel of CoBRA battalion-elite unit of Central Reserve Police Force, was killed after sustaining heavy injuries after Maoists opened indiscriminate fire upon the newly established security camp in forests of insurgency-hit Sukma district of Bastar division on Tuesday.

The head constable Suleiman was a trooper from 202nd battalion of CoBRA and he died during treatment at a CRPF’s field hospital.

Bastar range inspector general of police P Sundarraj told TOI, “Maoists on Tuesday evening between 4.30 and 5pm, opened fire upon the security personnel deployed on operation duty outside the newly set up camp near Dubbakonta and Pentapad forests in Chintagufa region of Sukma district. The security forces retaliated the attack and Maoists fled deep into the jungles.”

A head constable of CoBRA battalion Suleiman had sustained severe bullet injuries and had to be rushed to field hospital of CRPF in Chintagufa, but he succumbed to injuries during treatment, Sundarraj said. He was part of outer cordon cut off party and was resident of Palakkad in Kerala.

The region was being searched by security forces and reinforcements were sent to the spot.

In another incident, a Central Reserve Police Force personnel sustained injuries when a pressure IED planted by Naxals blew off in forests of Bijapur district of Bastar division. The condition of CRPF constable is state to be stable and was under treatment.

Police said that a team of CRPF’s 168 th battalion was out on anti-Naxalite operation in forests of Usoor region on Tuesday.

Suddenly an IED exploded when a constable stepped on the pressure IED planted by Naxals, often with an aim to injure the security personnel. While the operations are carried out by security personnel on foot, such IEDs have proven to be fatal for them.

The constable Dipak Paswan sustained minor injuries on his legs and was immediately rushed to nearest hospital. Reinforcements were sent to the spot and the operation was carried forward.

Condition of Paswan was stable and under treatment at Bijapur district hospital if needed, he would be shifted to Raipur for better treatment, police said.

Security personnel had on Saturday gunned down four Maoists including two women cadre in Bijapur district.

Meanwhile, the forces are on the alert mode with Maoists to observe PLGA week from December 2.
