Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport Runways to Close May 7 for Maintenance

The scheduled maintenance will impact both runways—Runway 09/27 (primary) and Runway 14/32 (secondary)—rendering them non-operational for a six-hour window. According to an official statement released by the airport operator, the exercise is a critical step toward ensuring safety and operational efficiency ahead of the monsoon season.

Spanning across approximately 1,033 acres, the maintenance activity is designed to preserve the structural integrity and longevity of the airport’s airside infrastructure. The process includes a comprehensive inspection of runway surfaces to detect wear and tear, along with preventive repairs to guarantee safe take-offs and landings during heavy rains.

The airport authority emphasized that planning for this operation began well in advance. Consultations with key stakeholders, including airlines, were conducted six months prior, allowing sufficient time for schedule adjustments and minimizing inconvenience to passengers.

During the maintenance window, specialists will carry out a range of technical tasks such as rubber removal from runway surfaces, repainting of markings at intersections, and detailed checks of the Airfield Ground Lighting (AGL) system. Additionally, cleaning of cable ducts and manholes, validation of Runway End Safety Areas, and testing of over 5,000 aeronautical ground lights and navigation systems will be undertaken.

CSMIA also employs advanced machinery to monitor and ensure that all maintenance activities are completed efficiently within the stipulated timeframe.

Notably, in 2025, similar maintenance operations were conducted twice—once before the monsoon on May 8 and again after the season on November 20—each involving a six-hour closure of both runways.

This annual initiative reflects CSMIA’s continued commitment to maintaining high standards of safety and preparedness, particularly in the face of challenging monsoon conditions.
