Lewis Capaldi raised the stakes in his feud with Noel Gallagher by performing one of the former Oasis star’s most iconic tracks – with a Chewbacca twist.
The Scottish singer donned a mask of the Star Wars icon as he strutted onstage at Glasgow’s TRNSMT Festival on Sunday evening, days after Gallagher likened him to the furry character.
The former Oasis frontman made the comparison in an interview last week, calling the 22-year-old “f****** Chewbacca” and saying he should “enjoy his 15 minutes” of fame.
Capaldi laughed off the taunts at the time, changing his name on Twitter to Chewis Capaldi and photoshopping his face onto a picture of the sci-fi beast.
On Sunday, after soaking up the cheers from TRNSMT crowd, Capaldi whipped off the mask to perform his set on the festival’s main stage.
Continuing his jibe at the 52-year-old songwriter, the Scotsman launched into a special rendition of Oasis hit ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ – renamed ‘Don’t Chewbac In Anger’.
The 22-year-old dedicated the cover track to Gallagher, who he referred to as “my dear, dear father”.
A war of words broke out between the pair after Gallagher called Capaldi an “idiot” during an interview on Manchester’s Radio X in June.
Capaldi responded by revelling in the snub on social media, posting on Instagram: “Number 1 single – who gives a f***? Number 1 album – who gives a f***? Noel Gallagher has just slagged me off. This is dreams coming true.
“It’s Father’s Day and I’m being slagged off by a man who’s old enough to be my dad, and I’ve never been more happy,” he added.
Gallagher, whose wife Sara MacDonald is from Edinburgh, then fuelled the spat in last week’s interview with Variety magazine.
"The greatest day of his life that I slagged him off or called him an idiot.
"It's the greatest day of his f****** life so far. He's just thinking 'wow'.
"Well, I know you're Scottish and all that but f****** hell. It is like a third world country but for f***'s sake, man, you must have had a better day than this. Surely."
Capaldi didn’t forget this insult to his country as he showed on Sunday when, along with his fancy dress mask, he wore the Scottish flag with pride.
