Chesterfield defender scores injury-time equaliser before saving penalty in six-goal thriller

Chesterfield defender Will Evans scored an injury-time equaliser before saving a last-gasp penalty to earn a valuable point against Ebbsfleet on Saturday.

The struggling Spireites were 3-0 down at half-time but mounted a stirring fightback as goals from Tom Denton and Marc-Antoine Fortuné hauled them back into the contest with the clock ticking down.

Evans then headed an equaliser five minutes into time added on but that was just the start of the stoppage-time drama.

Indeed, Chesterfield's second-half fightback appeared to be in vain when goalkeeper Callum Burton was sent off in the seventh minute of injury time for a challenge on Michael Cheek in the box.

But fresh from scoring the equaliser, Evans pulled on the gloves to deny Cheek and preserve a point in their battle against relegation from the National League.

"We just said, as a back four, we don't lose this game, we can't lose this game," Evans said after the game

"Cal getting sent off, having to face a penalty was bizarre to say the least.

"To be fair he couldn't have helped me out more with the penalty, it wasn't a great one, but you've still got to be there to save it."
