Chesterfield boss James Rowe issues call for National League promotion shakeup

Chesterfield manager James Rowe has become the latest boss to call for more promotion places in the National League.

The 38-year-old will enjoy some respite from the rigours of the fifth tier on Saturday when he leads the Spireites out at Stamford Bridge in the FA Cup.

But Rowe, whose side sit top of the table as the halfway stage approaches, has used the extra publicity surrounding his club this week to send a rallying cry in a bid to shake up the English footballing pyramid.

"I don't really call it 'non-league' anymore," the former Birmingham City and West Ham United coach exclusively told Mirror Football.

"I think the Vanarama National League now is purely professional other than a few teams that are hybrid anyway, so it's really a professional league."

But the division - full of cash-rich clubs like celebrity-owned Wrexham - currently has just one automatic promotion place into the EFL, with a second opportunity to become part of the famed 92 coming via the play-offs.

For comparison, League Two has four promotion spots, while only two teams are relegated.

"I think one automatic spot is my biggest grievance with our level - not the amount of games, not the intensity of it where you're playing Saturday-Tuesday, Saturday-Tuesday," Rowe went on.

"It's not enough in the pyramid, for me, we've got good quality down in this division now. Players are dropping down from League One, the top goalscorer in League Two, [Paul] Mullin, obviously dropped down in the summer.

"It's a really good league with really healthy attendances and I think that needs to be rewarded with more spots going into the EFL."

His plea echoes Bolton Wanderers boss Ian Evatt 's crystal clear verdict, having led former employers Barrow to automatic promotion in 2020.

"It is crazy the clubs in that division now – it's daft that there is only one automatic promotion place and another through the play-offs," Evatt said in November.

"For me, we have to sort that out. There has to be a fairer split.

"You can’t have three from the Premier League, three from the Championship, four from League One and then two from League Two. It doesn’t make any sense.

"It should be at least three to allow these clubs a chance to get back up again because the gulf in finances between the National League and League Two in terms of revenue is ginormous. It is too big."

Grimsby Town manager Paul Hurst is on the same page as the pair and recently told Grimsby Live : "I think there should be three promotion spots and three relegation spots.

"In League One, there are four up and four down, I don't really understand why there is an imbalance and why there aren't three promotions and relegations from each division.

"For me, I think, in the league that we're in, at least six or seven clubs would very easily compete in League Two. Probably more behind that too."

Saturday's third-round tie gives Chesterfield the chance to strut their stuff at the home of the European champions, and Rowe is sure his league-leading side will put on a professional show.

"Hopefully, we can do the league justice and carry the flag properly along with a few others that are in and around our division," the Spireites boss added.

"And I'm sure we will, we'll hit professional outcomes without a doubt and we'll be professional in what we do.

"We'll try our very best against an almighty challenge but we love challenges in our changing room and we're really looking forward to it - we're excited.

"We wanna enjoy the day, give our supporters something to cheer about and it's just a proud day to be marking Chesterfield back on the map.

"That's the main thing, it's bigger than just what happens on the pitch on Saturday; it's a marker that this club is coming back and on the up."
