Chester Zoo's monorail is being scrapped after almost 30 years

Chester Zoo is scrapping its monorail after 28 years.

The popular Zoofari monorail, which first opened in 1991, has given rides to millions of visitors since it launched, offering views of the animals, habitats and gardens that call Chester Zoo home.

But zoo bosses say the system ‘doesn’t even cover half’ of the 125 acres of the tourist attraction, so have made the decision to take down the monorail later this summer, reports Cheshire Live .

In this month’s members magazine, a zoo spokesperson explained that the monorail ‘no longer fits our vision for a world-class modern zoo’.

The statement went on to say: “It has been part of the zoo for nearly three decades but since its installation in 1991 the zoo has grown in size and the transportation system now doesn't even cover half of the 125 acres.

"Over the last few years we have experienced both system and train failures so this once state-of-the-art system is proving costly to maintain and unreliable for visitors."

The monorail, which was officially opened by the Duchess of Kent, even broke down on its first ever trip around the zoo - though has since played host to the likes of the Queen and Gary Barlow.
