Chester Zoo pay tribute to The Queen and announce closure date

Chester Zoo has paid tribute to Her Majesty the The Queen after her death at Balmoral.

The zoo told visitors it will be open today (Friday, September 9) but has confirmed a closure in the coming days. In a statement shared on social media, Chester Zoo recalled a ‘very special day’ in its history when The Queen officially opened its Jubilee Quarter in 2012.

The statement went on to inform visitors that the zoo will remain closed on the date of the State Funeral. The Queen was the first British monarch to reign for 70 years, with large scale celebrations taking place earlier this year to mark her Platinum Jubilee.

The Queen will be buried 10 days after her death on what will be a day of national mourning. Sharing the post, Chester Zoo said: “We are deeply saddened to hear the news that Her Majesty The Queen has passed away.

“Our thoughts are very much with the royal family and their loved ones. The Queen has been an inspirational figurehead throughout the years of her reign and will be sorely missed by so many around the world.

“Many of us here at the zoo still share wonderful memories of a very special day in our history when The Queen, along with The Duke of Edinburgh, kindly visited us in 2012 and officially opened our Jubilee Quarter, giving it the royal seal of approval.

“We send our most heartfelt condolences to the royal family at this difficult time. The zoo will remain open tomorrow (Friday 9 September) but our gates will remain closed on the date of the State Funeral.”
