Chester Races Ladies Day: Colourful and flamboyant outfits at May Festival

It might have been another dreary start weather-wise, but the Ladies’ Day fashion at Chester Races was anything but.

A kaleidoscope of colourful outfits brightened up the grey sky as the second day of the May Festival got underway, with statement reds, pinks and corals among the most popular choices alongside bold florals in a rainbow of hues.

But it wasn’t long before some blue sky started to peek through the clouds, with sunny spells throughout the afternoon.

Other racegoers opted for a more muted colour palette, with nude and monochrome also among the key trends.

The event is one of the highlights of the north-west’s social calendar, attracting hundreds of racegoers from across Greater Manchester.

Among them were Prya Boodhoo, 29, and Melissa Drummond, 30, who live in Manchester city centre.

Melissa, who oozed glamour in a red bodycon dress from Karen Millen and matching headpiece, said: “I went to Aintree last month, that was really fun. It was my first races and I’ve got the bug now.

“I like to stand out in a bit of red and just be fabulous, be glamorous, be sexy.”

Prya, who was wearing a black and white dress from H and M with a striking feathered hat, said: “I went for monochrome because it’s simple and effective.”

Hailing from Sale were pals Christina Cunliffe, 29, Caroline McWhirter, 34, and Patricia Gleave, 32.

Ted Baker was the label of choice for both Christina, in fuschia pink, and Caroline, in cobalt blue, while Patricia’s nautical navy number was from Cheshire boutique I Love That Trend.

Patricia said: “We love getting glammed up, the atmosphere, the winning - we hope. It’s just a nice girly get together, having a few champagnes and enjoying ourselves.”

Monochrome was popular among the ever-glam WAG pack - with Jude Cisse, Chantelle Heskey and Claire Merry rocking stylish black and white fashions for their day out at the event.

The official winner in the style stakes was Beth Roland, 19, from Chester, who was crowned the best-dressed racegoer in a competition judged by ChloBo jewellery designer Chloe Moss.

She was wearing a black vintage midi-skirt that belonged to her grandma in the 60s, teamed with a white top from River Island and co-ordinating hat.

The Chester University student, who grew up in Spain, said: “It’s amazing, I’ve never won anything before, not even at bingo! I’m really honoured.

“I don’t do big statements, I try to blend into the background really - which hasn’t worked this time!

“I like the elegant look, chic and classic.”

Meanwhile model Charlotte Dawson returned for a second day of races fun - and even though the temperatures were still less than sizzling went for a very daring cleavage-exposing nude dress.
