Chester-le-Street Primary School children still celebrating despite heartbreaking England Euros loss

Millions of football fans were left broken-hearted after England lost out to Italy in the Euro 2020 finals.

England's Euro dream was snatched away as players missed three penalty kicks in the European Championship final at Wembley after extra time ended 1-1.

But staff and children at Chester-le-Street CE Primary School in County Durham remain in high spirits and are still celebrating England with a day of fun and football.

Dressed in red and white and waving England flags, children danced and sang along to classic football tunes while also trying their hand at penalty shoot-outs.

Family Champion Katie Large said staff and children are still proud of England for how far they got and said the celebrations are still going on.

Katie said: "The celebrations are still going on even though England lost last night.

"The kids are in such high spirits we've got a big inflatable penalty shoot-out, we've got competitions going on in the classrooms because the weather is awful.

"We had a 10am start today and I think that has helped with the tiredness.

"The kids are all still in their football kits, they're still cheering for England, we're all just enjoying the celebrations."

Despite the inevitable disappointment over England's loss Katie said the celebrations were "much needed" after a tough year with Covid-19.

She said: "There were a few sad faces, I think they were disappointed but they're so proud of their team who they've all been rooting for coming this far and that just shows what good sports they are.

"We've had a rubbish year but we're still seeing the positives so this celebration was much needed.

"The kids have adapted so well to everything. We've had to close bubbles and ring parents to ask them to pick them up but they've all handled it amazingly well."

The school previously held a day of celebrations ahead of England's semi-final match against Denmark on Wednesday and had celebrations planned on Monday whatever the result.

Katie added: "This is the first time the children have experienced anything like this before so we're continuing the celebrations today."
