Chester-le-Street murder investigation continues as detectives hunt for clues

An investigation is continuing into the fatal stabbing of a man in Chester-le-Street.

Police vans and forensic vehicles remain on Melville Street after a into the death of the 26-year-old.

Emergency services were initially called to the County Durham town at around 2am on Sunday following reports of a stabbing.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and a second man, aged 42, was taken to Newcastle's Royal Victoria Infirmary with serious but non life-threatening injuries.

The North East Ambulance Service sent two ambulances, a Hazardous Response Team and air ambulance to the scene.

Throughout Sunday a large police cordon remained in place, with residents told they could not enter or leave their homes.

A large forensic tent could be seen in the middle of the road which forensic officers could be seen entering.

The tent has been removed and the cordon has now been lifted.

The cordon was initially put in place at around 5am, a resident said.

Helen Middlemas, 62, who lives on the street, said: “I didn’t hear a thing until I looked out my window.

“I have lived her 41 years and there has never been anything like this happen in all that time.

”It is a sign of the times. It’s a sad, sad world we live in.

”When you see a tent and forensics you know it is something serious.

”It must have been awful for the people living nearby.

“It is sad when it’s happening on your doorstep.”

As enquiries continued, Durham Constabulary deployed neighbourhood officers to the area to reassure residents.

The force confirmed it is not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.
