Chessington Zoo reopens to the public despite being in a Tier 4 coronavirus area

Chessington Zoo will reopen to the public on Tuesday despite being in a Tier 4 area which means only essential travel is allowed.

Chessington World of Adventures Resort is in Surrey which was plunged into Tier 4 on December 20 with the exception of the borough Waverley.

However Waverley was later placed into Tier 4 on Boxing Day.

Under the tougher restrictions anyone living in Tier 4 are warned to stay at home and are limited on household mixing to two people outdoors.

All non-essential shops, hairdressers and gyms are closed while pubs and restaurants must also shut but can offer takeaways and deliveries.

The resort temporarily closed on December 19 when Surrey was placed in Tier 4.

But a statement on its website has announced that an update from the Government means the zoo will be allowed to reopen on Tuesday.

It reads: "Following the recent update from the Government in response to Covid-19, confirming that London and subsequently the Resort is subject to Tier 4 local restrictions, our Resort Hotels closed on 15 th December and our Winter’s Tail event ended on 19 th December.

"However, we will reopen our Zoo from Tuesday 29 th December on selected dates.

"We ask everyone to take note of their local restrictions and that of the Zoo before pre-booking a ticket.

"Government guidance states those in Tier 4 can visit some public outdoor places, including Zoos, with your household, support bubble or meet with one other person if you maintain social distancing.

"We are continuing to monitor Government guidance closely and will update the information and advice here on our website if anything changes.

The website also stated that the zoo will be open weekdays until January 4 and weekends only until February.

The resort's hotel, sea life centre and theme park will remain closed.

The resort also announced the news of its reopening on Twitter which was not received well by some social media users.

One responded: "Forgive me if I'm wrong but as your in teir 4 people from outside of your area can not come can they ? Therefore visiting from anywhere other that your borough/shire would be breaking covid rules ???"

In June Chessington Zoo responded to a dad's scathing review after he visited it when it reopened after the first UK lockdown.

Matt Strudwick said he had been let down by the experience after his family spent a day there after it had been closed for nearly three months.

In an opinion piece for Surrey Live where he works as the content editor, Matt described how once inside there are one way signs everywhere and hand sanitisers every five metres but the two metre social distancing guidelines were also impossible to adhere at times.

He said the one-way system was confusing and the hot weather had caused the wild animals to shy away but the family did see a lonely gorilla scratching his head.

Summarising the visit he concluded: "As we left deflated, I couldn't but feel like those were the worst two hours I had ever experienced at Chessington.

"A day that promised so much but delivered as much entertainment as the Star Wars prequel trilogy, it is safe to say that post-lockdown zoo days at the theme park belong like its animals on the day - firmly in the shade."

However a spokeswoman for the zoo said Matt's experience "did not reflect the positive feedback they had received since the venue was reopened.

London and Whipsnade Zoos are currently closed but a statement on their website claims that new Government guidance will allow them to reopen.
