A chess piece purchased for five pounds in 1964, and kept in the closet of a house in the Scottish city of Edinburg for 55 years, fetched 735,000 sterling pounds ($928,000), hitting a new record for a medieval chess piece at auction.
The chess piece was found on the Isle of Lewis in 1831 in a room with stone walls.
The treasure made of sculpted ivory is composed of 78 chess piece and 14 pieces involved in other games, along with a buckle of a bag or belt. The stone is thought to be made in Trondheim, Norway between the years 1100 and 1200, at the end of the Viking Age.
