Chesney faints as it's revealed Gemma is pregnant with four babies on Coronation Street

There was a shock for 'Chemma' on Coronation Street when it turned out that they're expecting not just one but four babies.

In a first for the long-running soap, gobby Gemma Winter was told that she's pregnant with quadruplets, and her man Chesney Brown fainted at the news.

The sonographer was wide-eyed as she checked the scan after Gemma told how she's a twin and also her mum, her nana and her cousin.

Asked if she was seeing twins on the screen she gasped: "Not exactly twins, I'm sorry this is the first time I've ever ..."

"Don't tell me there's three in there" panicked Gemma.

The sonographer delivered the news (ITV)

"There isn't three, there's four," she told her, and Chesney promptly fainted.

"Carry on Coronation Street, I was howling at that faint, give Chesney the Oscar," tweeted one fan.

"They have been hilarious tonight, they had me crying with laughter," said another.

After Gemma asked a second opinion, a doctor delivered the news that she's indeed carrying "four placentas, four amniotic sacks and four foetuses."

But she and Chesney face a grave dilemma on Corrie after being warned that with multiple births there's a risk of miscarriage, stillbirth and premature labour.

"Risk of miscarriage with four babies is relatively high so we would offer selective reduction," said the doctor.

Gemma, who is 10 weeks pregnant, was told that if she does decide to go ahead with a multiple pregnancy she would have an ultrasound every two weeks and cesarean section at around 34 weeks.

"Every birth and every baby is different," she was told.

It's more than double trouble for 'Chemma' (Coronation Street/ITV)

Gemma, who met and fell for on-off boyfriend Chesney while working in Dev Alahan's kebab shop together, told him she didn't want to lose any of the babies and he said he'll support her.

The character, played by Dolly-Rose Campbell, had a scan after going to hospital with hyperemesis gravidarum which left her feeling sick and exhausted.

The severe morning sickness also affected American comic Amy Schumer and the Duchess of Cambridge during all three of her pregnancies when carrying Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.
