Two people have been arrested after a man was stabbed to death outside a Cheshire pub.

The 49-year-old victim was knifed near the Hammer and Pincers in Widnes on Sunday afternoon.

He suffered serious wounds and died before he could be taken to hospital.

A 35-year-old man and 39-year-old woman have been detained in connection with the incident, which was reported at 3.20pm. Both remained in custody overnight, Cheshire Police say.

The pub is on the town's busy Liverpool Road and close to Hough Green train station.

Chief Inspector Simon Parsonage said: "Understandably the local community will be concerned about what has happened."

He added:"I would like to reassure those living locally that we are doing everything we can to establish the circumstances of what has happened and extra officers will be patrolling the area overnight and into the morning to provide reassurance.

“If you have any concerns at all please speak to an officer."

He asked anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information to call the force on 101 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
