Cheshire police given 'extended' stop and search powers after yobs cause trouble at Macclesfield Fair

Police in Macclesfield have been given extended stop and search powers after a spate of antisocial behaviour at a family fair.

There have been a 'number of incidents' at Macclesfield Fair, resulting in two arrests, Cheshire Police said.

Last night, several young people were ordered to leave the fair after complaints from members of the public.

From this afternoon, officers will be able to search anyone they think may be carrying a weapon or causing serious violence, even if they have no grounds for suspicion.

The powers have been granted under Section 60 of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (1994), and will remain in force until 1am on Sunday.

Insp Penny Jones said: “Macclesfield Fair is a family event and we want all those attending to have a safe and enjoyable time.

“Sadly, last night there were a number of people who were intent on causing trouble which is why we have authorised these powers.

“The order will remain in place until 1am on Sunday and I would warn anyone with the intention of being disruptive or acting in an anti-social manner to stay away.

“There will be an additional police presence across the town anyone behaving in a disorderly manner will be targeted.

“I urge anyone with any concerns to speak to a local officer.”

The status, put up at 8.20pm, said: "Sadly a number of young people have been given directions to leave the area due to their behaviour. 2x have been arrested. We are taking a robust stance so those who have come to enjoy the fair can do so without others spoiling it for them."

Anyone who has any information about someone carrying a weapon can contact police on 101, or call Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
