Cheryl shrugs off X Factor backlash as she performs Love Made Me Do It on Graham Norton

Cheryl revealed that she “pokes fun at herself” on comeback track Love Made Me Do It as she brushed off criticism to perform on The Graham Norton Show.

The singer took to the stage in a red sequined jumpsuit to perform her latest single weeks after she was slated for her X Factor comeback.

Viewers slammed Cheryl’s “sexual” moves – which included licking her hand – and “painful” vocals. She later hit back at the “relentless abuse”.

But she appeared unfazed by her critics as she joined a troupe of male dancers on Norton's show before sitting down for a chat with the host.

Asked about the track, she said: “It kind of pokes fun at myself. It's not about anybody.

“I needed it [the music break]. You get into a routine and are on a treadmill for years and years. When you have a break, you have time to refocus and re-appreciate everything. It feels good.

“I have a body of work so I do have enough material for an album.” She admitted she will release singles now that streaming is a big part of the industry – but hinted she could “possibly” do an album.

Cheryl’s track sees her calling herself a “sucker” for falling in love too easily as well as mentioning that her friends constantly try to get her to “stop” because they have to “pick up the pieces” after her romances break down.

Cheryl makes comeback with first music in four years

The star was married to former Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole from 2006-2010 before saying I do again to Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini in 2014. Their marriage lasted two years.

Months after her divorce from her second husband, Cheryl got together with Liam Payne. The pair were together two years and share one-year-old son Bear.

Cheryl appeared alongside Ruth Wilson, Steve Carell, Dawn French and Michael B Jordan on the star-studded red sofa.

The Graham Norton Show airs Friday, November 30 at 10.35pm on BBC One
