Cheryl lands BBC radio show in surprise move which will see her play songs that 'shaped her life'

Cheryl has landed her own BBC radio show, which will see her share the songs that 'shaped her life'.

The Newcastle star, who has been largely away from the spotlight this past year, has been confirmed as the host of You, Me and R&B, which will launch on BBC Sounds today, Friday, August 27 and then air on Radio 2 in October.

Across 12 episodes Cheryl will share stories of her youth and love for R&B music, from TLC to Beyoncé.

Talking about her rather surprising career move, Cheryl said: "I’ve always had an absolute love and passion for R&B so I'm hoping listeners are transported back and absorbed in their own nostalgia too.

"Music can be really healing when you’re going through something painful or happy, by revisiting those moments you can take back your power, I've discovered that myself throughout the process."

As a teenager Cheryl, 38, sought after the soulful melodies from the likes of Mary J Blige and Erykah Badu.

Throughout the series she’ll look at uncovering the root of her obsession with the genre, reflecting on childhood stories and the songs connected to those special moments.

After being absent from Instagram for over a year, Cheryl excited fans with two selfies posted to her account in June, which she captioned "We back."

While her legions of fans were hoping for news of new music, the pictures were actually a teaser for her partnership with Feel Multivitamins.

Since bursting into the spotlight in 2002 on Popstars: The Rivals, Cheryl has scored countless chart hits, both as a member of Girls Aloud and as a solo artist.

She has topped the charts five times on her own with Fight For This Love, Promise This, Call My Name, Crazy Stupid Love and I Don't Care.
