Cherry blossom viewers low amid request for self-restraint

About 800 cherry blossoms in Ueno Park, Taito Ward, Tokyo, in partial bloom.

Visitors enjoyed viewing the trees in a quieter setting than usual -- with many wearing masks -- amid calls to refrain from holding gatherings.

In response to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's request to halt such activities, Ueno Park has been calling for visitors to cease from having cherry blossom-related events via announcements through its loud speakers and by having security guards on patrol throughout the facility.

Because the park hasn't set up places for people to gather and view the cherry blossoms, almost no visitors were seen unfurling plastic tarps.
