Elijah Blue Allman has had a relatively troubled life. As the son of Cher and the rock legend Gregg Allman, one could assume his life has been easier than most — but in actual reality, Elijah Blue’s life has been earmarked with one personal tragedy after another, which increasingly made him dependent on substances.
The last reported sighting of Elijah Blue was on the streets of Los Angeles, where he looked disheveled outside a popular city restaurant. The sight was concerning to people passing by, and the floating assumption was that he had relapsed. Well, soon after Father’s Day, that was confirmed when police were called to his home in Landers, California, where he was taken by the authorities and rushed to the hospital due to a suspected overdose.
Reportedly, it was not just a mere coincidence that Elijah Blue’s overdose happened over Father’s Day weekend. According to Yahoo!, the day opened emotional wounds for someone who is still crushed about his father’s passing in 2017. That’s not even the only familial loss that Elijah Blue has had to endure. In 1971, he also lost his brother Duane Allman in a motorcycle accident.
He’s been on and off drugs for pretty much his entire life, and his relationships have deeply suffered because of it. At one point, Cher tried to place him under conservatorship to help him manage his finances better during his substance dependency periods. But they had a very severe falling out, and Elijah Blue even accused Cher of trying to kidnap him.
For a brief period, Elijah Blue’s wife Marieangela King Allman was the one person that he trusted the most — much to the deterioration of his other relationships. But eventually, Marieangela also grew estranged from him, and they parted. Since then, she hasn’t spoken much about Elijah Blue in public.
When the news of his hospitalization broke, Marieangela shared a statement via People, saying:
“While it is true that Elijah has faced personal challenges in the past, one constant has been his unwavering commitment to sobriety and his loyalty to those he loves. Like many, he continues to confront his inner struggles — but it is important to recognize that he does so from a place of strength, not defeat.”
Elijah Blue had previously had a very tumultuous relationship with drugs in the 1990s, until he eventually got sober. Fox reports that on an interview with the AP in 1998, he credited a renewed faith in God and spiritualism as the reason he eventually got clean. Hopefully, he can find his path back there again.
Currently, he’s at a local hospital near where he lives, and the police have shared with the press that an investigation into his overdose is currently underway. Cher has shared with People that she’s currently doing everything she can to help her son, and that she considers helping her son through this struggle her job as a mother. Cher said:
“I’m not suffering from any problem that millions of people in the United States aren’t. I’m a mother. This is my job — one way or another, to try to help my children. You do anything for your children. Whenever you can help them, you just do it because that’s what being a mother is. But it’s joy, even with heartache — mostly, when you think of your children, you just smile and you love them, and you try to be there for them.”
It’s refreshing that, despite all the differences between each other in their family, everyone is showing support to Elijah Blue at this trying time — when he needs it the most.
