Cher reveals she was rejected as a Post Office volunteer

Cher appears to have hit a stumbling block in her quest to help out at the United States Post Service, after she was rejected as a volunteer.

The legendary singer, 74, is among the US celebrities sharing their concerns about the postal service after the removal of post boxes in a number of states sparked panic.

The postal service said that the boxes were being reallocated to areas with a higher volume of mail.

Fears over the USPS were sparked earlier this year when Louis DeJoy, previously a donor to Trump’s campaign, became postmaster general.

The president has opposed additional funding to the postal service, though extra money would be required to help process the anticipated increase in postal votes this autumn. It’s expected that more voters than usual will send their ballot by mail to avoid crowded public places as the coronavirus pandemic continues.

Trump has also made unfounded claims that postal votes are “dangerous” and create “tremendous potential for voter fraud.”

After expressing an interest in volunteering at her local post office in Malibu on Twitter - and assuring fans that she was “no[t] kidding” - Cher revealed that she was told that the postal service requires stringent background checks.

“OK, called 2 post offices in Malibu,” she wrote. “They were polite. I said, ‘Hi, this is Cher & I would like to know if you ever take volunteers.’

“Lady said she didn’t know & gave me # of supervisor. I called & said, ‘Hi, this is Cher, do u accept volunteers.’ NO, need fingerprints & background check.”

She went on to voice further concerns in a later tweet after praising Bill Clinton's speech at the Democratic convention, adding: “Said Trump’ll strangle our democracy if he thinks it’ll get him a 2nd term. Look at [hundred emoji] of mail boxes ripped out of the concrete & thrown into dumps.

“Sorting machines torn apart.

“Only Walmart employs more ppl [sic]. Many vets work there. Many older people will die without meds from PO.”
