In his apology, Donald Trump was at pains to highlight that his lewd comments about groping women, unearthed and published on Friday, were made a decade ago.
His apology oscillates between pointing out how old the footage is to accusing Bill Clinton of doing worse.
“I’ve never said I’m a perfect person, nor pretended to be someone that I’m not. I’ve said and done things I regret, and the words released today on this more than a decade-old video are one of them. Anyone who knows me knows these words don’t reflect who I am,” he said in a taped statement.
But Cher was among a chorus of people quick to point out that Mr Trump would have been 60 when he made those remarks.
Cher has delivered her challenges to Mr Trump in tweets filled with capital letters and well-placed emojis ever since he launched his campaign for the Republican nomination. She stuck with this format for her reaction to the video on Saturday.
The singer, one of his most scathing critics, was unsympathetic to his calls for understanding.
But the most stinging criticism of Mr Trump came from Robert De Niro in video footage which emerged on Friday.
