Cher Here We Go Again Belfast gig leaves fans in awe of 73-year-old icon

Cher once sang "If I Could Turn Back Time" and it certainly seemed like she did in the SSE Arena Belfast last night.

The 73-year-old singer put on a performance which would rival acts half her age, in fact even those a quarter her age would struggle to keep up.

Cher became a household name in the 1960s when she released I Got You Babe with her late ex-husband Sonny Bono and she has been one of the biggest pop stars on the planet ever since.

And last night, fans of all ages were treated to a back catalogue of her greatest hits. The show started with a video montage of her glittering career and the cheers from the crowd reached their peak when the woman of the moment appeared on a suspended platform while dressed as a viking – yes really – and performed Woman's World.

This was followed by Strong Enough and a hilarious 15-minute chat with her fans which she rounded off by jokingly asking us: "What's your granny doing tonight?" Er, definitely not this I can tell you! After a quick costume change she arrives back on stage on a mechanical elephant – yes really, again – and sings All Or Nothing.

The next hour is filled with a tribute to Sonny as he appears on a background screen while she sings I Got You Babe, a rendition of Abba hits (Waterloo, SOS, Fernando) from her role in Mamma Mia 2 and a video interlude of You Haven't Heard The Last Of Me and a performance of Welcome To Burlesque as a nod to her appearance in the movie Burlesque.

This paves the way nicely for a reflection on her movie career which is highlighted in a video montage before Cher reappears to perform Walking In Memphis and The Shoop Shoop Song (It's In His Kiss) before disappearing off stage again.

Much to my delight she reappears in her trademark black see-through bodysuit (did I mention this woman is 73??) and performs If I Could Turn Back Time.

She disappears again but the crowd shows no sign of leaving as there is one big hit missing and you better BELIEVE we aren't going anywhere until we hear it.

And sure enough after a minute she is back on stage to perform the 1998 hit which topped the charts in 21 countries and remained at No1 for seven weeks in the UK. Talk about going out with a bang.

Last night marked the last European date of Cher's Here We Go Again tour – her seventh as a solo artist – before her backing singers, wardrobe and wig assistants (of which there must be many), trapeze artists and the rest of her huge entourage head across the Atlantic to begin the US leg.

America, you are in for one hell of a show. Long live Cher!
